Ever since I was a kid I have been told that fluoride was needed to keep my teeth healthy. It was and still is in most tooth pastes and many water supplies. Heck they even came out with a fluoride rinse for kids and adults. Even the American Dental Association endorses many of these fluoride products. Let’s pull back the curtain and find out the truth.
What Is Fluoride And Why Is Fluoride In My Drinking Water?
Fluoride is a highly toxic chemical compound that has a history of being used in rat poisons, roach killers and insecticides. As little as one-tenth of an once of fluoride will cause death in humans. It is a by-product of the iron, copper and aluminum industry and we were making lots of those metals in the early 1900s. So we had lots of fluoride sitting around and since it is so toxic, it is hard to dispose of safely. Suddenly an answer was found. Yes, without any solid research fluoride was renamed the tooth miracle. Ok, ok, there was a study done that deemed fluoride safe when added to drinking water and that it was a great way to help strengthen teeth. Interesting that the funding of the study was from the largest aluminum companies at the time. With some help from the right gov’t agencies it became a practice to add fluoride to drinking water.
Later when the metal industry fell a new player came on the scene and today one of the largest sources of fluoride is the fertilizer industry. Since there is a lot of fertilizer produced there tends to be a lot of left over fluoride… same solution different supplier.
Does Fluoride Help My Teeth?
According to the largest study ever conducted on fluoridation and oral health it does not prevent tooth decay. The study was conducted on 39,207 school children in 84 different areas in the U.S. in the mid-80’s, and the results showed no statistical difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated cities.
What about the world? France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Iceland and Greece do not use fluoride in their drinking water. All of these countries have shown a reduction in tooth decay and it has been attributed to better oral hygiene, without fluoride.
Fluoride is an enzyme and hormone inhibitor, affecting the nervous system as well as digestion. Fluoride is the major cause of brittle bones and teeth, and it is responsible for causing mottled enamel, producing white, light gray or brown spots on the teeth.Fluoride actually alters the natural biological creation of tooth enamel and creates false, more brittle tooth enamel (which now contains fluorapatite). This false enamel is no better at preventing tooth decay than regular tooth enamel in the long term. A stronger barrier to bacteria is not what keeps tooth decay at bay, but rather a balanced internal body chemistry form good food habits. – Cure Tooth Decay, Ramiel Nagel
From a stand point of healthy teeth and bones fluoride is a false contributor, we have been lied to all these years. We have been told that we needed fluoride in out water, tooth paste and mouth rinses to help strengthen our teeth and now we see the truth is fluoride has done the opposite. I used to drink lots of water from the tap to stay hydrated. My teeth had some of the spots Ramiel Nagel speaks about above. After changing to filtered water and non-fluoride tooth paste over the years I have seen my teeth become more even in color, little did I know I had fluoride poisoning. If fluoride harms my teeth what else is done in the body.
Fluoride And Health
Fluoride affects the body in a number of ways since it is a neuro-toxin. It has been shown to cause brain and kidney damage, cause lower I.Q., and may even cross the placental barrier in pregnant women. In a study done by Dr. Dean Burk, former chief chemist of the US National Cancer Institute, and Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, president of the Safe Water Foundation it was proved that water fluoridation increased the risk of cancer. Their studies concluded that:
One-tenth of the 350,000 cancer deaths per year in the U.S. are linked with artifical public water fluoridation. Consumer Health
After this study was released, the U.S. Congress called for a study to be done on animals to determine if the results were correct. The result of the studies released in 1990 showed clearly that fluoride does cause cancer. That study was released 21 years ago, but we have not seen or heard that fluoride is being removed from water. The majority of Europe does not use fluoride in its public water systems. What is our problem?
Fluoride also helps the brain to absorb aluminum a substance found to be linked to Alzheimer’s patients. Three different osteoporosis studies have associated hip fractures with fluoridation. Excessive fluoridation has been shown to affect musculoskeletal and nervous systems leading to limited joint mobility, ligament calcification, muscular degeneration and neurological deficits. I think you are seeing by now how bad fluoride is for you, even in the low concentration in many of our public water supplies.
How To Avoid Fluoride
So how can you avoid fluoride in your drinking water? Don’t reach for that bottled water, as many contain fluoride or it is added. The simple water filters like Brita, Pur and most others will not remove fluoride, just check their websites. Removal of fluoride requires a special filter such as such as activated alumina defluoridation filters.
What is Activated Alumina?
Activated alumina is aluminum oxide, the same chemical substance making up sapphire and rubies, but without the impurities that give the gems their color. Activated alumina is not aluminum, which is a highly-processed metal made from activated alumina. Activated alumina is porous meaning it has a lot of tunnel-like pores that run all through it. As the water runs through and over it, through the attraction of the metals, 90% to 98% of fluoride (and arsenic) is normally removed. The Over time fluoride coats the surface of the alumina and eventually the cartridge needs to be replaced. – source Wikipedia
Reverse osmosis systems do remove fluoride and most minerals, which for the latter is not so great. We will cover all the pros and cons of water filter systems later this week when we present some solutions for your home.

This recent Chinese study makes a profoundly obvious point of why all parents need to oppose water fluoridation: Wang SX et al. (2007). Arsenic and fluoride exposure in drinking water: children’s IQ and growth in Shanyin County, Shanxi province, China. Environmental Health Perspectives 115(4):643-7.
In the low fluoride area, there were 3½ times more bright children as in the high fluoride area. Also, the high fluoride area had 2 ½ times more mentally retarded children than the low fluoride area.
What do we want for our children? Why would we even consider giving them fluoridated water, much less ADDITIONAL fluoride supplementation?!
We didn’t used to know these statistics. Now we do and can make better informed decisions.

Great comment Golda. When you add it all up the fluoride added to water is bogus. Cancer issues, IQ issues, etc… thanks for the link – Jeff
Thank You for the article. I wonder about activated alumina defluoridation filters – I never heard about them before… Can not wait to read the rest about this topic.

We have added an update to this article about Activated Alumina.
Thanks for the comment. Jeff
That’s great! Wish they would take it out of the water here.
They are taking it out of the water here in Calgary, AB this year!
